🚴♂️ From Trail Dust to Deadlocking Dogs
After a weekend of mountain biking through Dorset’s trails, I swapped handlebars for hand tools and settled into my usual rhythm of emergency locksmith callouts. One job, though, stood out—not for its complexity, but for its unexpected culprit.
📞 The Callout
It was 1:30am. I was getting some much needed rest after a long ride when the phone rang. A local couple were locked out of their home in Bournemouth. No lost keys, no broken mechanism—just a mysteriously deadlocked night latch. Intriguing.
🐶 The Canine Culprit
Upon arrival, I was greeted by two flustered homeowners and a couple of very excited dogs on the other side of the door. As the story unfolded, it became clear: the larger of the two dogs had jumped up at the door in excitement, pawing the snib just right to engage the deadlock from the inside. No opposable thumbs required—just boundless energy and terrible timing.

🔓 The Fix
Non-destructive entry, of course. A few minutes of gentle persuasion and the door was open—no damage, no fuss. The dog greeted me like a hero, tail wagging, blissfully unaware of the drama it had caused.
🧠 Lessons from the Lockout
It’s moments like these that remind me locksmithing isn’t just about tools and technique—it’s about stories. Behind every lockout is a slice of life, and sometimes, it’s a four-legged one.
Whether I’m restoring 19th-century rim locks or adjusting UPVC mechanisms, it’s the unexpected that keeps things fresh. And while I didn’t need my mountain bike for this job, I did need a bit of patience and a sense of humour.
